The innovative “Terra Lemnia” project, through the newly established Terra Vita certification, comes as a complement to our company’s ongoing efforts to preserve the agricultural tradition and biodiversity of our region.

The “Terra Vita – Agricultural Tradition and Biodiversity” certification was developed by MedINA – Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Man, with the support of the certification body TÜV Austria Hellas and an interdisciplinary team of partners. It primarily applies to food products produced in Greece using traditional farming methods that benefit biodiversity and the landscape, while also promoting the local identity of each area.

The main objective of the certification is to offer an objective way to certify the identity of agricultural products produced both in Lemnos and other parts of Greece.

A key pillar of the certification is the implementation of a set of traditional agricultural management practices, such as preserving traditional rural landscapes and promoting biodiversity in specific geographic regions, highlighting local cultural features directly connected to the cultural heritage of the products’ origin.

In Greece, every region is known for a particular food product. These products are core elements of local culture and often transform a region into a gastronomic destination. Similarly, in Lemnos, our rusks, flomari pasta, and flour are naturally part of this project—especially since the main raw material (Lemnos wheat) comes exclusively from the island.

Our collaboration with MedINA and the Terra Lemnia project began in 2021, aiming to certify both ourselves as producers of the raw materials and the final products. As a business involved in both primary production and the processing and manufacture of final goods, we meet all the necessary criteria for participation in this initiative.

By obtaining Terra Vita certification, we gained the opportunity to present our products as a comprehensive dietary ensemble that represents our region, while simultaneously safeguarding our land and product quality. The use of environmentally harmful substances gradually deteriorates product quality and ultimately harms soil productivity. That’s why we avoid anything damaging to the environment, in an effort to protect it and leave a lasting legacy for ourselves and future generations.

From raw materials and production methods, to reviving past knowledge and techniques, we continue to move forward with the same values and quality standards. Our goal remains the preservation of the cultural identity of our land, the safeguarding of local production practices, and its unique tourism value.

Official Presentation of the ‘Terra Vita’ Certification Scheme in Lemnos

On Saturday, April 16, 2022, MedINA – Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Man officially presented the new “Terra Vita” certification scheme for Agricultural Tradition and Biodiversity in Lemnos.

The event was attended by producers, entrepreneurs, tourism professionals, and local authorities of the island.

MedINA representatives and the Terra Lemnia team opened the event, sharing the efforts and actions taken since the project’s inception—both in practice and research.

Ambassador and chef Alexandros Papandreou spoke about the importance of individuals and communities caring for the local agricultural tradition and environment. He also emphasized the growing consumer demand for higher-quality products and the significance of the Terra Vita label in promoting Lemnos’ gastronomy.

During the presentation, special recognition was given to the products and two Lemnos-based companies already awarded the Terra Vita certification, including our own. The advantages of the initiative were highlighted both for the products themselves and for promoting the island as a gastronomic destination, with a call for more producers and businesses from Lemnos to join the effort.

The Terra Vita certification is an important tool for any business that obtains it—and a powerful competitive advantage.

Sahre it!
