A study by Nielsen on consumer trends in supermarket chains highlights a decline in the consumption of basic consumer goods.

According to the research company, the Greek supermarket market saw a 1.1% decrease in value during the first half of 2017 (data YTD up to July 15, 2017) compared to the same period last year.

Personal care products showed the most significant decline, down by 4.4%, followed by household products, which fell by 3.5%. The only category that exhibited a positive trend was fresh/bulk products, which increased by 2.0%.

In the food and beverage sector, significant losses in value continued in the categories of milk (-8.6%), packaged bread (-5.3%), and whiskey (-6.8%). Among personal care products, deodorants and diapers were among the hardest-hit categories, with losses of 7.3% and 7.2%, respectively. As for household products, bleach sales dropped by 8.9%, while kitchen paper declined by 7.7%.
