PORIAZI FAMILY: AGRO-ID Certification from the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (CERTH)
After several months of anticipation, the AGRO-ID project has been successfully completed for the Poriazi Family. This initiative, launched a year ago by the Region of North Aegean, was conducted in collaboration with top research institutions such as the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (CERTH), the General State Laboratory of Cyprus, the University of the Aegean, and the Cyprus University of Technology. It marked the first comprehensive mapping of authenticity characteristics of local products in Greece using innovative and reliable scientific techniques.
The project aims to highlight the advantages and authenticate the identity of local and traditional food products, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the agri-food sector.
Among the local products examined were those of the Poriazi Family, which were authenticated in terms of type and origin based on:
- their genetic identity (DNA)
- isotopic fingerprint
- and microbial profile
The following samples were analyzed:
- Lemnos Wheat – Poriazi Family
- Whole Wheat Flour from Lemnos – Poriazi Family
- Whole Wheat Rusks – Poriazi Family
- Wheat Rusks – Poriazi Family
- Breadcrumbs – Poriazi Family
The analysis confirmed and certified that the samples contained durum wheat, did not carry the D genome, and therefore belong to the species Triticum durum (durum wheat). Furthermore, radioisotope analysis verified the cultivation area, confirming that the seed originates from the island of Lemnos. Comparisons with samples from a genetic material bank also showed that the samples belong to the local wheat variety “Lemnos”.
The agri-food sector is one of the main economic pillars of the North Aegean. In fact, the majority of exports from the Region come from this sector.
The Poriazi Family actively supports this field, striving to restore Lemnos as the grain basket of the Aegean. Through vision and continuous effort, they have long supported the local community, their partner farmers, and the local economy. Indeed, they were the first business to engage professionally in cereal cultivation (since 1981) and remain the only company with a complete system for cereal production and management.
